It is a quality discipline that focuses on product and service\u00a0excellence.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Six Sigma has been employed in numerous companies to reduce operating\u00a0cost, increase sales and revenue, reduce variability, reduce defects, increase\u00a0reliability, incorporate innovation in products and services, increase productivity\u00a0and profitability.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The objective of a Six Sigma program is to reduce the variation in the process\u00a0to the extent that the likelihood of producing a defect is virtually non-existent.\u00a0This means improving quality, and meeting or exceeding customers\u2019<br \/>\nexpectations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The improved quality and reliability in products and services leads to higher\u00a0perceived value and increased market share thereby, increasing revenues and\u00a0profitability.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The term sigma (denoted by the Greek letter, \uf073\uf029\uf020is a metric based on the\u00a0statistical measure called standard deviation and is a measure of variability in a\u00a0process. A metric is simply a measurement of some quality characteristic (for\u00a0example, percent of defects).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The term Six Sigma statistically equates to 3.4 defects per million opportunities.\u00a0Thus, a Six Sigma process is capable of producing 3.4 defects per million\u00a0opportunities (DPMO). In practice, this refers to the maximum acceptable range\u00a0of noncompliance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Six Sigma seeks to find and eliminate causes of defects and errors in manufacturing\u00a0and service processes by focusing on outputs that are critical to customers and a clear\u00a0financial return for the organization.
